The Census Bureau has just issued the July 1, 2008, population estimates by age and by state. these estimates show a population 60 and older of 54.0 million (17.8% of the population) and a population 65 and older of 38.9 million (12.8% of the population). These percentages are both increases from the 2007 percentages of 17.4% of the population 60 and older and 12.6% of the population 65 and older. The 2008 population numbers figures show a 2007-2008 increase of 3.0% in the 60+ population and 2.4% in the 65+ population.
